HOTELS STATLER
My dear Miss Addams,
I have been traveling so much the last week that your letters did not reach me until [today].
We have received no response from Lochner, so no doubt he went on to Spain from Switzerland, when he secured the best representation, in my [judgment]. On Thursday Mr. Ford and others will have another conference. [page 2] Dear Kirchwey and I am of the opinion that Mr. Lochner's return at this time would be very unfortunate and we will attempt to dissuade Mr. Ford to have him return. In any event I will do my best to bring him together with you, <if he comes> and I am certain that he is equally anxious to see you.
There seems to be a concerted attempt just now on the part of many [page 3] including Dr. Aked, Mrs. Fels, and John Barry to remove Mme. Schwimmer. I believe this situation is the cause of the present complication. I know that Mme. Schwimmer has three times offered her withdrawal to Mr. Ford, and in each case he would not consider the proposition. However, I personally believe that something must be done to remove the cause of the constant dickering. [page 4] While in Detroit I was shown a copy of a cablegram signed by Aked, Fels, and Barry in which they demanded the withdrawal of R. S.
I have also received a lengthy letter from Dr. Jordan in which he expresses his views on the Ford Expedition, and says he expects to sail for Europe in April. You mention that you received a letter from "O'Brien," -- did you not [mean] W. J. Bryan? [page 5] I am very happy to hear that you are feeling better, and trust your health will improve each day.
My plans are to return to Europe early in March, or possibly wait for Lochner's return. I will inform you of my movements and of any news. With all wishes, I am
Cordially yours
Alfred W. Kliefoth
