My dear Miss Addams:
It was good of you to send me that nice message -- through Paul Kellogg -- about the Ford Expedition stories.
I never did a harder piece of more than that of following the real effect of that amazing Expedition. Since coming back I have been almost attacked for my attitude towards the thing.
However it seems to me conclusively proven that something was gained by [page 2] reason of the soundness of the plan and the sincerity of Mr. Ford's purpose. And if America follows up this advantage -- one easily lost by bad handling or delay -- great pain may come. If America does not help promptly and effectively then indeed the Expedition's trail may grow into an obstructing wall for future efforts to butt against.
I hope Miss Balch will go. Of course if you could be there the waiting miracle could happen; the people would unite and grow strong in organization.
Everyone asked for you and each one had a sense [page 3] of personal sorrow of hearing that you were ill.
Can you think of any way I can help? Nothing seems to me so urgent as the present crises in the peace movement. Consider this question a rhetorical one for of course I expect no answer to this note.
