Biographical Text

Eleanor Sophia Smith was a resident of Hull-House, who lived in Hull-House from 1897 to 1924, and then again in 1934 until her retirement in 1936. Between then, she lived with Mary Rozet Smith. She was the founder and head of the Hull-House music school. She studied music in Germany and then with John Dewey at the University of Chicago. Smith wrote her own music for the music school, which had political undertones, as they often discussed the labor movement. She also wrote children's songs. Between 1900 and 1915, Smith wrote many protest songs that were used by Hull-House residents for political organizing. Smith was a member of the Chicago Woman's Club, Chickaming Country Club, North Side Branch Equal Suffrage League, and the Audubon Society.

Smith died in 1942.
