Biographical Text

Ralph Waldo Emerson led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He made many critiques on society through dozens of essays and over 1,500 lectures. He wrote on topics such as individuality, freedom, and the relationship between the soul and the world. Due to his health, Emerson moved to St. Augustine, Florida, in 1826, where he started writing poetry. He worked as a pastor for Boston's Second Church for a while, but then resigned, as he disagreed with the church's methods. During the Civil War, Emerson was strongly against slavery.

Emerson married Ellen Louisa Tucker in 1829, who later died in 1831. He then married Lydia Jackson in 1835. They had four children together. Emerson died in 1882 of pneumonia.
