Biographical Text

Frederick Law Olmsted was an American landscape architect. Along with his business partner, Calvert Vaux, designed buildings on many American college campuses, in addition to public parks. His most famous project was designing New York City's Central Park. Olmsted was also a part of the sanitary commission during the Civil War.

Olmsted married Mary Cleveland Perkins, widdow of Olmsted's brother, in 1859. The couple raised five children. Three were from Perkin's first marriage to Olmsted's brother, Daniel, and two were the couple's biological children, Mary and Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. He died in 1903.
