Biographical Text

Samuel McCune Lindsay was a special agent for the U.S. Senate Finance Committee in 1892. He worked as an agent for the U.S. Industrial Commission from 1899-1900, where he was assigned to report on railroad labor. From 1896 to 1907, he was a professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, and from 1907-1939 he was a professor of social legislation at Columbia University. Lindsay was also Chairman of the National Child Labor Committee, President of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, and a member of many other organizations, such as the American Economic Association, the International Labor Organization, and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Lindsay married Anna Robertson Brown in 1896. They had three children, Flora, Daniel, and Eleanor. Lindsay died in 1959.
