Biographical Text

Adolf Meyer was born outside of Zurich, Switzerland. He was trained as a psychiatrist in Germany and came to America in 1892. He worked in several hospitals and was a professor at Cornell before he joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins. There, Meyer became the first psychiatrist-in-chief and his ideas about psychology and the needing to attend to the whole person, including the biology, in order to help them were extremely influential.

Meyer married Mary Potter Brooks in 1902. The couple had one daughter, Julia Lathrup Meyer. Meyer died in 1950.
