Biographical Text

Albert Jeremiah Beveridge was admitted to the Indiana bar and practiced law in 1887, in Indianapolis. In 1884 he entered the political scene by giving speeches at campaign events and was the keynote speaker at the first Progressive Party convention in 1912. In 1899, Beveridge was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served until 1911. In the 1910 elections he lost his seat, but in 1912 he joined the Progressive Party and ran for the position of Indiana's governor, though he lost. In 1914 he ran for Senate again as a member of the Progressive Party but lost again. After the Progressive Party disintegrated, he ran again for Senate in 1922 as a Republican, losing again. While serving as Senator, Beveridge helped create a federal meat inspection law in 1906. After his political career, Beveridge became a historian and wrote biographies for justice John Marshall and President Abraham Lincoln, which won him the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography. He was a member and secretary of the American Historical Association, which created the Beveridge Award in his honor in 1939.

Beveridge married Catherine Eddy Beveridge in 1907. They had two children. Beveridge died in 1927.
