Biographical Text

Z. T. Sowers was a member of the Committee of One Hundred for the American Association for the Advancement of Science on National Health, and of its sub-committee on legislation. Sowers was born into a wealthy family, his father being a Virginian planter. During the Civil War, he was a member of the Virginia Cavalry. He was educated at the Berryville Academy and Colombian University in Washington, D.C. In 1870 he moved to New York City and interned at Bellevue Hospital, examining physician at Bellevue and Charity hospitals. He also worked as a resident physician at the Blackwell's Island hospitals. In 1872, Sowers moved back to Washington D. C. and began his lifelong career of being a doctor. He was also a lecturer at his alma mater, curator of the Museum of the Medical College, and secretary of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia. He helped found the Washington Hospital for Foundlings (later the Washington Home for Foundlings). Sowers served as its president of the board of managers and chairman of the medical staff of the hospital.

Sowers married Eleanor M Sowers in 1872. They had two children together. Sowers died in 1919.
