Biographical Text

George Platt Brett Sr. was born in London, England on December 18, 1858. He immigrated to the United States in 1869. Brett followed his father, George Edward Brett, to the American branch of the Macmillan Company which his father had founded in New York. He succeeded his father in running the New York base of the Macmillan Company, and eventually separated it from its parent company in England. Brett was one of the first English publishers to pay special attention to American authors. During his time at the Macmillan Company, Brett published the works of Upton Sinclair, Winston Churchill, Jack London, and Jane Addams. Brett died on September 18, 1936 in his home in Fairfield, CT.

Brett married Marie Louise Brett in 1893. The couple had one child, George Platt Brett Jr.. He took over as president and chairman of the Macmillan Company after his father's death.

George Platt Brett, Sr. is best known as Jane Addams's publisher. With the help of the Macmillan Company, he printed such books as Newer Ideals of Peace, The Spirit of Youth and the City Streets, New Conscience and an Ancient Evil, and Twenty Years at Hull House. Brett and his vast network allowed Addams's words to become more available to the people.
