Biographical Text

Charles Roden Buxton attended Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was president of the Cambridge Union. In 1902 he began practicing law and giving lectures at Morley College, where he served as principal from 1902 to 1910. In 1910, Buxton was elected as a member of Parliament in Ashburton, but lost his seat in a second election in the same year. He was one of the founders of the Union of Democratic Control in 1914. In 1917, he joined the Independent Labour Party, and from 1922 to 1923 he was a MP for Accrington, and from 1929 to 1931 he was a MP for Elland. In 1920 he was secretary to the Labour Party's delegation to the Soviet Union, and from 1926 to 1939 he was Parliamentary Adviser to the Labour Party.

Buxton married Dorothy Frances Jebb in 1904. They had two children. Buxton died in 1942.
