Biographical Text

Francis Hackett was born in Ireland and was raised on a farm and educated at a nunnery, the Christian Brothers at Kilkenny, and a Jesuit secondary school. He attended college at Clongowes Wood College and Royal University, but he never finished his degree. In 1901, Hackett immigrated to the United States due to being unsatisfied with the way the British government was ruling Ireland. He lived in New York for a while, publishing articles in All Ireland Review, United Irishmen, and The Gael. He also worked as a clerk for a law firm, in the advertising department of Cosmopolitan Magazine, and editor of the Chicago Evening Post. In 1906, Hackett became a resident of Hull-House, where he taught Russian immigrants how to speak English. While in Chicago, he criticized Chicago's commercial culture, racism, and lack of equality for women. In 1911 he began his career as a novelist and moved to Madison, Wisconsin. He then moved again back to New York City, where he helped create the New Republic. Hackett then became a full-time free-lance writer, and he moved back to Ireland with his wife. After his autobiographical novel, Green Lion was censored in Ireland, Hackett moved to Denmark, his wife's home country. However, due to the rise of Nazi influence, the Hacketts returned to the United States in 1940. Hackett then wrote for the New Republic, The New York Times, and The American Mercury. After 1948, Hackett moved one last time, back to Denmark.

Hackett married Signe Kirstine Toksvig in 1918. Hackett died in 1962.
