Description

Amherst College was founded in 1821 by Zephaniah Swift Moore, then president of Williams College, in an attempt to relocate Williams College. The College was named after the town of Amherst, MA where it was erected, which in turn was named after Lord Jeffery Amherst. Amherst College was a men's institution until 1975 when it became a coeducational school.
