Biographical Text

Alfred Landon Baker was a lawyer and financier. He was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, though his parents were only visiting from Boston, where he would grow up. Baker practiced law in Lynn, Massachusetts, where he also sat on the City Council and School Committee until moving to Chicago. There, he set up his own practice and then retired from it in 1895. Baker then began the brokerage company, Alfred L. Baker & Company. Apart from his business, Baker was active in the Chicago community. In 1896, he joined the Board of Trade of Chicago, which he even served as president of from 1898-1900. Beginning in 1907, Baker was the vice president of Chicago's National City bank. During this time he also held an office position at the Calumet Chicago Canal and Dock Company. From 1906-1907, he was the president of the Board of Trustees at Lake Forest University and was also a member of the Chicago University club. He aided in the creation of a child welfare exhibit for a Chicago convention in 1911 as a general committee member, as well. Later, in 1916, Baker sat as a chairman on the Citizens Terminal Plan Committee.

Baker married Mary Corwith in 1894. The couple had 2 daughters together. Baker died in 1927.
