Biographical Text

James Bryce attended the University of Glasgow, the University of Heidelburg and Trinity College, Oxford. He was a fellow of Oriel College, Oxford, and in 1867 he was called to the Bar and practiced in London. From 1870 to 1893 he was the Regius Professor of Civil Law at Oxford, and from 1870 to 1875 he was a professor of jurisprudence at Owen's College, Manchester. He was also a politician; his most political positions included being Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, President of the Board of Trade, Chief Secretary for Ireland, and Ambassador to the United States. When he retired from being Ambassador to the United States, Bryce was raised to the peerage and became known as Viscount Bryce, becoming a member of the House of Lords. During World War I, Bryce wrote the official Bryce Report, which condemned Germany for its activities in Belgium. Bryce also served at the International Court at the Hague.

Bryce married Elizabeth Marion in 1889. Bryce died in 1922.
