My dear Miss Addams,

I have had your book on Democracy and Social Ethics for some months and had dipped into it, but I have only now had an opportunity to read it carefully through. I want to tell you how fine and sane I think it is. In the midst [page 2] of the speculation that is abroad and the dogmatic reiteration of ethical standards and maxims developed under a different form of society, it is refreshing, indeed to find a statement of one problem, educational, social and political, coming from such appreciative contact with those at the bottom of our social structure and at the same time marked by such a breadth of intelligence [page 3] and depth of earnestness.

Sincerely yours,

Edward Howard Griggs
