Biographical Text

William Adams Brown attended Yale University, for both his undergraduate education and a year of graduate education. In 1890, Brown studied at the Union Theological Seminary and then studied for two years in Germany. In 1892 he became a professor at the Union Theological Seminary, where he taught Church History before becoming the Roosevelt Chair of Systematic Theology. Brown was also chairman of the Presbyterian Church’s Home Missions Committee, where he organized and ran the American Parish on the Upper East Side and the Labor Temple. He also founded the Union Settlement. Brown was also involved in politics and was the chairman of the Committee of Fourteen and Secretary of General War-Time Commission of the Churches during World War I. In the later years of his life, he was a Permanent Fellow of the Yale Corporation and was a Research Professor in Applied Christianity. He retired in 1936.

Brown married Helen Gilman Noyes in 1892. They had four children together: John Crosby, William Adams Jr., Winthrop Gilman, and Helen Gilman. Brown died in 1943.
