Dear Miss Addams,

Here is the "Declaration of Spiritual Independence", about which I spoke to you. May I ask you to transmit it to people in the United States who appear to you to be disposed to be sympathetic towards the thoughts contained in it, especially amongst intellectuals of note. Then, too, I would beg you, if you are in agreement with the spirit of this Declaration, to give me your support before leaving Europe.

Kindly accept, dear Miss Addams, my respectful sympathy.

(Signed) ROMAIN ROLLAND.
