Biographical Text

James Simpson was a Scottish immigrant who rose to prominence in Chicago's business world. He immigrated to the United States in 1880 and studied at public schools before entering a business college. He worked as a clerk for Marshall Field & Co., working his way up from the cashier's office to Marshall Field's confidential clerk. When Field died in 1906, Simpson became the company's second vice president. He then worked his way up to the president and chairman of the board. He was also a director of numerous companies, including the Super Power Company of Illinois, the Western United Gas and Electric Corporation, the 7th District Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago, the New York Central Railroad, and A. M. Castle & Co. In 1932, Simpson retired from Marshall Field & Co. and became chairman of Commonwealth Edison and Public Service, a position he kept until his death. He was also a member of numerous clubs.

Simpson married Jessie McLaren in 1904. They had three sons: James Jr., John, and William. Simpson died in 1939.
