Miss Jane [Addams],
Hull House,
Chicago, Ill.

Dear Madam:--

We are in receipt of your letter of March 14th requesting permission to reprint your two essays which appear in "PHILANTHROPY AND SOCIAL PROGRESS", and in reply will say, that while the sale of this book is not large, we think that what sale there is is due largely to your contributions to the book, and it seems to us that to use the material in the way you suggest might interfere with our sale.

We hope, therefore, that you can see your way clear to make some other arrangements for the present. As long as our book is in print we should prefer not to have you use the material in the way you suggest, but should we decide not to reprint the book at any time we shall, of course, be very glad to have you use the material in other ways.

Yours very truly,
T.Y. Crowell [signed]
