My dear Miss Van Winkle:
I am quite mortified to discover that your letter of September twenty-sixth in regard to the appointment with the California Federation of Women's Clubs has not been replied to. I am just recovering from a wretched attack of bronchitis and for several days my letters were somewhat confused.
I am afraid I could not undertake a trip to California before Christmas, owing to various obligations here. Perhaps there would be an opportunity later. I always enjoy the California women and am sure there should be a splendid response from them. I am writing an address especially for club women which I will give for the first time at the Michigan Federation on October sixteenth as you have kindly arranged.
I hope to be quite recovered in a few weeks and able to keep my engagement to speak at least twice a month. I was deeply disappointed to have to decline the Lansing appointment, the very first thing you asked me to do.
