Description

The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) was formed from the International Committee of Women for Permanent Peace, at the Second International Congress of Women, in Zurich, in 1915. The organization's goals were broad-based and argued for a radical revisioning of society that led to a peaceful world and an end to war. Though securing full political rights for women was seen as an integral part of its work, the WILPF's vision was broader, encompassing all people. WILPF believed that peace would only be possible if the world was free if people had self-determination, accomplished total disarmament, and the creation of economic development and opportunity. During World War II, the WILPF was mostly inactive due to the war, peace activists were jailed in some countries, and many members left the organization, which opposed the war, to help in war efforts. Its educational department, the Jane Addams Peace Association, was founded in 1953 to promote peace education. In the 1960s and 1970s, the WILPF continued to recognize the human right to resist injustice. In recent years they have become invested in defending the environment.
