Biographical Text

William Loeb, Jr. was the private secretary of Theodore Roosevelt while he was Governor of New York. Roosevelt retained Loeb as his secretary when he was appointed Vice-President. After Roosevelt became President in 1901, Loeb was made Assistant Secretary, and by 1903 became Secretary to the President. Loeb was an influential adviser and public front for Roosevelt, controlling access to Roosevelt and serving as a buffer. After working for Roosevelt, Loeb became the Collector of the Port of New York, where he gained a reputation for weeding out graft and professionalizing the department. He retired in 1913 but remained active in business and in the Roosevelt Memorial Association. Loeb died in 1937.

Loeb married Katherine W. Dorr in 1901. They had one son, William Loeb, Jr.
