Biographical Text

Ella Flagg Young was an educator and activist. Exceptionally smart and highly interested in teaching, she entered the Normal Department of the Chicago High School at the age of 15, finishing the curriculum two years later. After a self-imposed two years of volunteering to assist a second-grade teacher, Young began teaching primary school in 1862. After taking a break to receive her PhD. from the University of Chicago, Young served as superintendent of the Chicago public schools from 1909-1915, when she retired. During WWI, she sold bonds for the war effort.

Flagg married William Young in 1868. Young died in 1918 after contracting influenza while working in Idaho.
