Biographical Text

Chicago native Ernest Poole was an American journalist and writer who traveled to Russia following the 1905 Revolution, writing fourteen articles for The Outlook. Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, Poole traveled back to the country for the Saturday Evening Post. His articles in both magazines, no doubt, caught the attention of Jane Addams.

After graduating from Princeton University in 1902, Poole became a settlement worker at University Settlement in New York City, where he first gained notice as a writer. Poole became a widely published journalist and war correspondent and a celebrated author, penning twenty-five books from 1906-1949. He won the first Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1918 for His Family.

Poole married Margaret Winterbotham in 1907 and they had three children, William Morris, Nicholas, and Elizabeth Ann Lanchester. He died in 1950.
